Our son made this song up while lying in bed on July 4 when he was 5. We listened and recorded it over the baby monitor. He'd never sang it before or since, but he does like to hear the recording. One of our friends suggested we share it for the 4th...so here it is!

Apple may be following the law correctly here. This is just the latest in a long line of examples proving that the law has reproducible bugs and needs to be patched.

Jailbreaking an iPhone constitutes copyright infringement and a DMCA violation, says Apple in comments filed with the Copyright Office as part of the 2009 DMCA triennial rulemaking. This marks the first formal public statement by Apple about its legal stance on iPhone jailbreaking.

Apple's iPhone, now the best-selling cellular phone in the U.S., has been designed with restrictions that prevent owners from running applications obtained from sources other than Apple's own iTunes App Store. "Jailbreaking" is the term used for removing these restrictions, thereby liberating your phone from Apple's software "jail." Estimates put the number of iPhone owners who have jailbroken their phones in the hundreds of thousands.

Regardless of the validity of Apple's legal position (IANAL, check Groklaw if you want an informed legal opinion) Apple is NOT doing the right thing here to be lobbying to keep bugs in place.

I say this as a long time Apple individual user, customer, evangelist, and enterprise user.

And I say this as a citizen of the USA, and of the Internet, and of the world:

Apple, cut it out!

What Apple should do is NOT lobby to make it illegal to run whatever software you want on a computer you bought from Apple. (Of course Apple has no responsibility to support you if you go hacking on their software and muck it up.)

Met up with Margaret F at Magnuson Park for an afternoon of play and picture-taking.

The old classic "throw rocks into water" proved its appeal remains intact even for these newfangled kids.

For the 4th year running, Zeb wanted to go to the MLK march.

This year's was considerably happier in mood than years past!

Some of our favorites these days are:

Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne for the grownups.

With the kids (4 and 7): Apples to Apples, Jenga. Monopoly Junior, Chutes and Ladders, Candyland and Hi Ho Cherry-O. Othello and Connect Four. I'm probably forgetting a few... Oh yeah, card games: War, Uno, The Great Dalmuti.

If you live in our neighborhood, Berserk Games has a great store on Greenwood that's open even in the snow. Highly recommended! We have to rein ourselves in to stop from clearing out the place. (Ahem, don't tell the kids, but we're about to get Blokus, too.)

The range and quality of board games out there today far surpass anything we may have grown up with as kids, and in spite of the competing allures of online gaming, there is still something elementally satisfying about the roll of the dice and the click-clack of little wooden counters.

Luckily, there are a lot of games that are fun for nerds like me and normals like my wife and kids, games like Settlers, Carcassonne, Spooks, Last Night on Earth, Apples to Apples, and classics like Sorry and Risk. But if you're not as seriously OCD about games as I am, you may not know where to start when you're contemplating a family game purchase.
